West Bank Diary: Middle East Violence as Reported by a Former American Hostage
West Bank Diary: Middle East Violence as Reported by a Former American Hostage

When Jerry Levin was CNN’s Middle East bureau chief living in Beirut, he was kidnapped and held hostage by the Hezbollah for almost a year. Yet when he was released, instead of being vindictive against his captors, Jerry decided to devote his life to giving voice to those silenced by foreign policies that often victimize the innocent. He had been around the world enough to know the "little ones" are the ones who suffer when the powerbrokers are trying to make points. So on his being released Jerry became a dedicated advocate for nonviolence and a volunteer for the Christian Peacemaker Team working in Hebron, West Bank.

This chronicle of his daily struggle to protect the innocent, shows Jerry's determination to prove the power of nonviolence in a world addicted to violence. On his daily missions Jerry sets out to be an example as he escorts Palestinian children to school, the infirm to their doctor's or farmers to their fields, being a peacemaker in a world filled with hate and violence. Levin tells of the plight of the Palestinians cut off from each other, from their hopes and dreams, and from their heritage. Their lives are held hostage to myth and historical inaccuracy. Here Jerry sheds light on the suffering, violence and dispossession that belongs to the Palestinian people. 248 pp.

Becoming a Hezbollah hostage for over eleven months launched veteran journalist Jerry Levin and his wife into a new career of being peacemakers, concentrating on the Middle East. When not working for peace abroad they are in residence in Birmingham, AL. Jerry can be contacted  at jlevin0320@yahoo.com
