THE ABUSED CHILD IN SEARCH
OF SAFETY
Lessons from Florida
by Kent S. Miller,
Ph.D.
From the Back Cover
“In a field where so many are intent on
generating heat, Kent Miller has chosen to shed light. Not satisfied with
scholarly treatises and second-hand accounts, Prof. Miller spent part of his
retirement working in child welfare offices to see the problems for himself.
The result is a book that combines the rigor of a scholar with the firsthand
insights of a good journalist. Prof. Miller offers a useful guide for anyone
looking for ways to fix a badly broken system.”
-Richard Wexler, director of the National
Coalition for Child Protection Reform
“It was with great admiration that I read
Kent Miller’s analysis of the current child welfare scene. This succinct,
factual and, above all, useful book on a controversial and politicized subject
combines a detailed and accurate analysis with a sprightly and invigorating use
of clear and appropriate metaphors. I heartily recommend its careful reading
not only by the specialists, but by all those concerned with how the problem of
“victimhood” arouses negative responses and undercuts competent and caring
services to abused or neglected children and their families.”
-Rev. Mark Waldo, Episcopal priest and member
of the advisory board of the Child Welfare and Policy Group.
Kent S. Miller, professor emeritus of
psychology at Florida State University, lives in Tallahassee, Florida. Much of
his professional work has focused on mental disability law and the relations
between the mental health and the criminal justice systems.
